The Totally Normal Event

Friday, June 27th, 2008

SPARCThis Saturday we’ll be attending Jeff Mach’s The Totally Normal Event, a benefit show for the SPARC Summer Experience which is a summer program for gifted youth combining elements of summer camp with the multilevel benefits of rigorous academic achievement. In other words a summer camp for really smart kids, much smarter than you and I most likely.

The event includes a tun of performers like The Dresden Dolls, Freezepop, The White Elephant Burlesque Society, The Mighty Mike Saga, Voltaire and many more.

You’ll also find all sorts of vendors and artists, including our big sister Grendel’s Den Design Studio offering spooky art, which we all know you dig.

There’s even a big interactive back-story and plot you can participate in throughout the event. Not too sure what it is but my bet is on some sort of fantasy based theme.

In any case it’s all for a good cause and you should go.

Guillermo Del Toro Keep’n It Real In Hellboy II

Friday, June 27th, 2008

I’m a special effects junkie. I love trying to figure out how something is done. But what I really dig is when someone improves upon a current, or even more so, a seemingly outdated technology. In the case of Guillermo Del Toro’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army they take the animitronic suit and vastly take it steps beyond. And you can really see this in one of the main characters named Wink, a 7-foot-plus-tall troll who is the muscle for the main villain Prince Nuada. Below is a behind the scenes video showing some of Wink’s moves, which are pretty swank and realistic.

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog Teaser

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

The teaser for Joss Whedon’s upcoming on-line series Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog looks like it’ll be nerdtastic, which is not really a big surprise.

Whedon says -

“It’s the story of a low-rent super-villain, the hero who keeps beating him up, and the cute girl from the laundromat he’s too shy to talk to.”

Sounds a little autobiographical if you ask me.

Staring Neil Patrick Harris as Dr. Horrible, Nathan Fillion as Captain Hammer, Felicia Day as Penny, the show will consist of three ten-minute episodes.

Smells Like Teen Spirit, The Ukelele Version

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Yes, this is a clip of the Ukelele Orchestra of Great Briton (who the hell knew they even had one) performing Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit.

I’ll just let that settle into your brain for a moment.

Now on to the video!

VLOG

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

VLOG (short for video blog) is a new online horror series from Twisted Pictures (the guys who dish out the SAW franchise of films) and Break.com. The premise is simple – Some lady named Brooke Marks and a deranged internet killer exchange a loving embrace… no wait… Marks is being hunted by the killer and you, the viewer, get to watch as her buddies get slaughtered one-by-one in each episode. That is until Marks is dispatched herself, at which point I’m sure she’ll return from the dead for the VLOG sequels.

You can watch all of the current episodes of over on the VLOG site. Below is the trailer that gives you a pretty good idea of what you’ll be watching.

Watchman Movie Poster

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Here’s a look-see at a movie poster standee someone captured at some theater for the upcoming movie Watchman, based on the comic of the same name that comic nerds seemed to think could never be made into a movie. Hey comic nerds… you were wrong. But that isn’t to say that Hollywood won’t screw it up. I personally have hope though. 300 director Zack Snyder seems to be a perfect fit for the somewhat psychedelic superhero story.

Rob Zombie’s Tyrannosaurus Rex Teaser Poster

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Horror-Rocker king Rob Zombie released the teaser poster for his next film Tyrannosaurus Rex, which apparently is about a bad-ass wrestler on the run from a menacing biker gang from hell.

From the looks of this poster I think it’s pretty safe to say the usual suspects will be staring in the film – Ken Foree, Danny Trejo and Rob’s babe-a-licious wife Sheri Moon Zombie.

The release date will be August 28th, 2009.

Futurama: The Beast With A Billion Backs Out Today!

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Futurama: Beast With A Billion Backs Today is the day my fellow Futurama fans. Today is the release of the second Futurama film – The Beast With A Billion Backs hits the shelves today.

Described as a “depraved, yet sensuous” adventure, writer and producer David X. Cohen refers to it as “disturbing.” He goes on to say “There is certainly more of an adult theme in this film than the average Futurama episode.” Well with quotes like “These aren’t tentacles, they’re gentacles!” I think that’s pretty obvious.

So what’s the movie about and what tasty bits are included in the DVD you may ask coffin-stuffer? Well let me tell you…

In Futurama’s latest and most tentacle-packed epic, space itself rips open, revealing a gateway to another universe. But what lies beyond? Horror? Love? Or maybe both, if it happens to contain a repulsive, planet-sized monster with romantic intentions! Nothing less than the fate of human and robot-kind is at stake as the Futurama crew takes on The Beast with a Billion Backs.

The Beast With A Billion Backs will be presented in widescreen format with English Dolby Surround 5.1, along with French and Spanish subtitles. Bonus features include:

-Commentary By Matt Groening, David X. Cohen, Billy West, John DiMaggio, Maurice LaMarche, Michael Rowe, Claudia Katz, Peter Avanzino and Lee Supercinski
-Futurama The Lost Adventure – a long-lost full-length adventure produced for the video game with audio commentary by Matt Groening, David X. Cohen, Billy West, John DiMaggio, Maurice LaMarche, Michael Rowe, J. Stewart Burns and Lee Supercinski
-Meet Yivo! Featurette with David Cross
-A Brief History Of Deathball Featurette
-Blooperama: The Futurama Cast At
-3D Models With Animator Discussion
-Storyboard Animatic: The Beast With A Billion Backs, Part One
-A Sneak Peek at the Next Futurama Epic! -Deleted Scenes/Storyboards: Original Opening, Fry and Colleen Meeting, St. Asimov Parade, Zapp and Scientists, Amy Fry and Leela, Scruffy the Janitor
-Futurama: Bender’s Game – a sneak peek at the next Futurama epic!

That should keep you busy.

George Carlin

Goodbye to a hero that preached commonsense to many generations.

“My feeling is that as long as you’re going to die, you should go out with a bang,” Carlin wrote in his best-selling book, Napalm and Silly Putty. “I say go out big, folks; it’s your last chance to make a statement. Before you go, give ‘em a show.”
