Philly’s Dr. Shock

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Back in the day there was one thing that was universal on TV… horror hosts. Every city had them. Each week a macabre figure would greet you within their dungeon and entertain you with their usually campy shtick between the showing of a classic horror film.

Being that I’m a Philly boy I grew up with Dr. Shock, AKA Joseph Zawislak. He combined the traditional comedic insult formulas created by horror host god Zacherley with magic tricks and his own cast of sidekicks like Boris and Bubbles (Dr. Shocks daughter).

Unfortunately on September 28, 1979, Zawislak died of heart failure at the age of 42. His rabid fan base (including yours truly) were heartbroken. A few others tried to fill his shows, most notably Saturday night Dead’s Stella, but none could capture Zawislak’s charm and fun.

Below are some clips from Dr. Shock’s show.

Depp and Burton to make Dark Shadows Movie

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

As if Sweeney Todd wasn’t a big enough of a fish to fry, Johnny Depp and Tim Burton are teaming up again to bring another beloved macabre classic to the big screen – the ’60s TV soap opera full of monsters and camp, Dark Shadows.

Dark Shadows was one of the more unique TV series ever made, combining classic horror with campy soap opera style, it became an instant cult classic spanning 1,225 episodes from 1966 to 1971.

Burton has been confirmed as director but the rumors that Depp will star as the ever-angsty vampire Barnabus Collins have yet to be announced.

Trailer for Whedon’s Dollhouse

Friday, May 16th, 2008

I know we’ve got some pretty rabid Joss Whedon fans here, including me and my wife. And I know a lot of us are looking forward to his new sci-fi series Dollhouse. So to help wet your appetite here’s the two-minute trailer for the show that was posted to YouTube late Thursday.

The Andromeda Strain Trailer

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

This Memorial Day weekend A&E releases their remake of The Andromeda Strain, a ’70s movie that was based on the Michael Crichton novel of the same name.

Now I am one for slamming remakes. Most times you can just smell the taint of “bad” lurking within. But I will admit that this revision of the quintessential biological apocalypse may be pretty swank, especially since it will be far closer to Crichton’s version than the ’70s film, and Ridley Scott has his fingers all over it too.

For those who have never read the novel (shame on you) or seen the original film (again, shame on you), the general story goes something like this:

An entire town is killed by a mysterious virus brought to earth by a returning satellite. A search through the town reveals two survivors: a baby and an old man. Why the virus spared them could provide the key for immunizing the populace. A crack team of scientists isolates themselves with the survivors in an underground laboratory, and now they only have a few days to find a cure before the world is destroyed.

Below is a trailer for the A&E version followed by one for the ’70s version, which was considered pretty good in them there days.

Caffeine + Muppets + Radom Violence = Good Times

Saturday, April 5th, 2008

There’s three things that always makes us smile here at ZMP: Muppets, coffee and random violence. So it would be no surprise that when we stumbled upon these video montages of Wilkins Coffee commercials featuring the early incarnations of Jim Henson’s Muppets, that we found ourselves giggling like a bunch of 13 year-olds.

In these you’ll find a precursor to Kermit the Frog beating the crap out of a pudgy character over and over again due to its lack of love for Wilkins Coffee. He carries a revolver, smokes, and at times gambles. These commercials are simple, clever and downright violent by today’s standards. But damn we love ‘em. Enjoy!

Jimmy Kimmel’s day with Richard Simmons

Friday, April 4th, 2008

Last night was the 1000 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, which was by far one of the best he’s done. Below is the highlight of that show, a bit he did with Richard Simmons. I dare say that it is possibly one of the best late-night talk show skits ever. I laughed so hard I think I peed myself a little. Just a little.

Bite My Shiny Lego Ass!

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Lego BenderSee the image to the left here boys and girls? It’s just what you think it is – a LEGO Bender! Alas though, it’s scratch-built and not available from the fine Danish company. I must admit that I let out a but of a squee when I initially thought that this would be an official release from LEGO. Yeah, I’m that kind of fanboy for the TV series. Pepa Quin, a mad-skilled LEGO builder, decided to take it upon himself to create the entire crew, the Planet Express headquarters and ship, and even a Slurm billboard, all from Futurama. There’s a slew of images of his creations here.
