Cronenberg Brings You The Fly The Opera

David Cronenberg has become a genius or is incredibly stupid. He and Grammy and Oscar-winner composer Howard Shore (Lord of the Rings) have teamed up with Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly) to bring you The Fly The Opera, an operatic adaptation of Cronenberg’s 1986 film The Fly.

I don’t know much about operas but I do know who Plácido Domingo is, and they got him to conduct the U.S. premiere for the LA Opera, who commissioned the opera. In the world of stuffy music Domingo is a heavy-hitter, so having him involved adds some street-cred I would guess.

Time magazine described The Fly as “a profound parable on love and loss.” Uhm… what, no Brundle-Fly vomit?

Below Shore talks about The Fly The Opera.

Futurama: The Beast With A Billion Backs Out Today!

Futurama: Beast With A Billion Backs Today is the day my fellow Futurama fans. Today is the release of the second Futurama film - The Beast With A Billion Backs hits the shelves today.

Described as a “depraved, yet sensuous” adventure, writer and producer David X. Cohen refers to it as “disturbing.” He goes on to say “There is certainly more of an adult theme in this film than the average Futurama episode.” Well with quotes like “These aren’t tentacles, they’re gentacles!” I think that’s pretty obvious.

So what’s the movie about and what tasty bits are included in the DVD you may ask coffin-stuffer? Well let me tell you…

Or maybe both, if it happens to contain a repulsive, planet-sized monster with romantic intentions! Crotchety Old Fan Brings Back Classic ScFi

What is a jaded SciFi fan to do these days when the SciFi Channel just seems to not care about you anymore? Yeah, yeah, there’s Battlestar Galactica but really… what have they done for us lately? Well if you’re a guy like Steve Davidson you start your own SciFi channel is what you do my friend. And Steve did just that, well kind of. Steve has set up on the Internet The Classic Science Fiction Channel, a place to watch a good number of classic SciFi. From Johnny Soko and His Flying Robot to Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Steve’s on a mission to bring back the SciFi to Science Fiction.

As Steve explains

“THIS is the channel I’d watch on a regular basis - even if it was only on for background noise. Sure, some of the shows are definitely hokey and I’d probably flip over to Discovery or History when they aired (even despite the fact that this would be my own channel) - but from the small bit of research I’ve done on the net, every single one of them has a fan base that would love to be able to see them on the boob tube again, so who am I to judge?”

How can we argue that? Now it’s off to watch The Brain That Wouldn’t Die.
