This is arguably the best 7 minutes I’ve ever spent watching a video. This animation created by Italian artist BLU is mesmerizing, creative and down right entertaining. Trust me, you’ll want to watch this.
Steve Archer, part of the amazing musical team Ego Likeness, has written and illustrated his first children’s book - Luna Maris. The book’s story is pretty neat:
“We all have questions…even the moon. On his night off, the moon decides to journey to the earth in search of the answer to a burning question: What is the ocean for?”
The book is due to hit the world soon (not too sure as to when that is). In the meantime here’s an interview with Archer about the book, how it came together and the process of creating the illustrations -
The nominees for the 2008 Eisner Awards have been listed. It’s pretty damned pack with talent in all aspects of the comic industry. Included are some who are well overdue for their kudos, in particular ZMP fave Barry Windsor-Smith, who is up for a nomination into the Hall of Fame. Long overdue in our opinion.
Some other ZMP favorites nominated are:
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 8, by Joss Whedon, Brian K. Vaughan, Georges Jeanty, and Andy Owens for Best Continuing Series and Best New Series. Also for Joss Whedon and Brian K. Vaughan, Buffy the Vampire Slayer for Best Writer.
Y: The Last Man, by Brian K. Vaughan, Pia Guerra, and Jose Marzan, Jr. for Best Continuing Series.
And ZMP’s all time favorite comic of all, The Goon has another strong representation…
Dwight T. Albatross’s The Goon Noir, edited by Matt Dryer for Best Humor Publication, and Eric Powell, The Goon for Best Writer/Artist—Humor… and Eric Powell, The Goon: Chinatown for Best Painter or Multimedia Artist (interior art).
Clive Barker is well known as a filmmaker and author but he is also a very accomplished artist. And it is a rare treat when his work is displayed in a public setting, let alone on the East Coast. So we’re pretty damned excited to hear that his work will be on exhibit at Sloan Fine Art in New York City. The exhibit will run from April 17th to May 10th, with the opening reception on Wednesday, April 16, 7 to 9 pm.
During the exhibition, conceptual drawings for Barker’s upcoming film The Midnight Meat Train will be on display in the project room. These works are a rare glimpse at the artist’s process and the birth of many of the ideas and characters included in the finished film.
News has it though that Barker will not be attending the opening, but that really shouldn’t stop you form making the trip to see his amazing pieces of art if you live near New York City.
I have to admit that I’m a promowhore, and as such I give you all the following whoring of me:
To the left is the cover design I did for the upcoming book Orgy of Souls by Maurice Broaddus and Wrath James White, two extremely talented authors who love to give you a good scare. Just click the image to see a larger version of the cover. You can order Orgy of Souls at Apex Publishing and it’s available as a hardcover and trade paperback. The hardcover will be a limited edition (numbered 1 to 350), each signed by the authors and myself.
The story itself is one of brothers, the priesthood, male models, and twenty souls drenched in blood, powdered with cocaine and more than one kind of ecstasy. How the hell can you go wrong with that I ask? How?
Remember those old EC Comics you loved as a kid? All of the zombies, werewolves and buxom witches? I know I do. Especially the vivid covers - filled with tantalizing tidbits of what was to come.
Aly Fell over at ImagineFX shows you how to recreate the look and feel of the old pulp horror comics from the ’30s to the ’60s using a little of your drawling skills and PhotoShop, just like the one you see to the left. The online workshop includes instructions and a helpful file full of fonts, textures and more to help you along.
