Here is a short documentary on the Scratch Art gallery opening at Canvas LA. “With a very narrow margin for error, Scratch Art is an incredible test of artistic ability. Here, tattoo artists scratch a black medium surface with a sharp object to create their images.”
The event was put together by Hyperspace Studios‘ Guy Aitchison and Michele Wortman, and you can get a closer look of the actual artwork that was on display on the site’s gallery.
If you’re unfamiliar with scratch art, it’s a technique where drawings are created using sharp knives and tools for etching into a board (the scratchboard) covered in thin layer of white China clay that is coated with black India ink. Scratchboard can also be made with several layers of multi-colored clay, so the pressure exerted on the instrument used determines the color that is revealed. Using scratchboard is said to yield a highly detailed, precise and sometimes textured artwork.
